Innovation is transforming Australia’s energy industry, accelerating the transition to a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient system. From the rapid integration of renewable generation and distributed energy resources (DERs) to the adoption of advanced digital technologies and new market mechanisms, the sector is evolving at pace.

These innovations are not only enhancing efficiency and reliability across the grid but also opening up new opportunities for collaboration between industry, government, and communities as Australia works towards its net zero ambitions.

As champions of progress in the energy sector, CutlerMerz was proud to be the Industry Innovation Award partner at the Energy Networks Australia Awards Dinner.

This year’s finalists showcased outstanding creativity, technical excellence, and forward-thinking approaches that are driving the sector forward. Each project reflected the spirit of innovation that is reshaping how energy is generated, delivered, and consumed.

The shortlisted finalists were:

  • AusNet: Live line transmission works
AusNet achieved an Australian first by diverting a 500kV transmission circuit into the terminal station while it remained energised. Working alongside Consolidated Power Projects and Quanta Energized Services, AusNet successfully adapted advanced live line methods to local conditions. This avoided outages during upgrades and set a new benchmark for the sector.
  • Ausgrid: Energy storage as a service
Ausgrid’s initiative gives households access to community batteries, enabling them to draw on locally-stored solar through retail plans. This program eases pressure on the grid, reduces costs, and supports decarbonisation, demonstrating how networks can enable a smarter and more inclusive energy future.
  • Essential Energy: V2G – The journey has begun
Partnering with CSIRO, Sigenergy and AUSEV®, Essential Energy launched Australia’s first ready-to-use vehicle-to-grid (V2G) solution. This innovation offers households a new way to capture value from their EVs while contributing to a more reliable, sustainable energy system.
  • Endeavour Energy (NSW): Flying towards safety
Replacing helicopters with agile drone operations, Endeavour Energy is transforming bushfire risk management and asset inspections. Supported by AI analysis, the program enables teams to assess up to 1,000 poles a day, detect faults early, and set a new standard for safety, efficiency, and sustainability in the sector.

And the winner was… Essential Energy with their groundbreaking V2G solution.

Congratulations to all!
