About Us

CutlerMerz is an organisation that is strongly aligned with the principles and values of teamwork and collaboration, client service orientation and progressive thinking. Our inspiration came from two remarkable people.

Ian Hamilton Roden Cutler (9 October 1961 – 24 January 2013) was an Australian engineer with Merz Australia and later Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s. Ian made a significant contribution to the careers of engineers (including the Directors of Cutler Merz), instilling in them the values of team work, client service, dependability, compassion and humility. He was a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers, involved on the CIGRE Australian Panel and the Electrical and Information Engineering Foundation at the University of Sydney.

Charles Hesterman Merz (5 October 1874 – 15 October 1940) was a British electrical engineer who pioneered the use of high-voltage three-phase AC power distribution in the United Kingdom, building a system in the North East of England in the early 20th century that became the model for the country's National Grid. Merz established an engineering consultancy in the UK in 1899 that expanded around the world over the next century.

Both Cutler and Merz were gifted at applying problem solving mindsets to complex strategic issues. The combination of their names evokes strong values in our people who strive to further the legacy of two extraordinarily distinguished people.
