Power System Analysis

Our Power System Analysis team know the importance of the simulation environment to delve into the intricacies and interactions between connections and electrical power systems, and believe that our point of difference lies in how we are able to synthesise our analyses and communicate our insights through meaningful deliverables.

Our insight into the electricity network connection processes and outcomes builds on engagements over many years, which include undertaking extensive grid connection and network related studies.

Furthermore, we have a thorough understanding of regulatory framework, national electricity rules, and jurisdictional requirements, grounded in our electricity network planning and design background.

Practice Areas

Grid Connections

We provide our clients with grid connections support that leverages our involvement across renewable energy, battery energy storage system, synchronous and hybrid connections to distribution and transmission networks across Australia and internationally.

  • Connection Enquiry
We provide our clients with support on projects undergoing the connection enquiry process and have a strong working knowledge of relevant systems and processes.
  • Connection Application and Registration
We provide our clients with support on projects undergoing the connection application and registration process. This includes; studies, due diligence, synthesisation of packages, substantiation of proposed access standards and technical coordination between key stakeholders.
  • Commissioning
We provide our clients with support on projects undergoing the commissioning process and all related R2 activities, including; test plans, staging tests, hold point tests, commissioning reports, setting change requests, notifiable exemptions, auxiliary load connection applications, non-compliance issues, model evaluation and checks, and performance assessment of generating system impacts.
Power System Studies

Our engineers undertake steady state and dynamic simulations to analyse the performance and interactions of connections in the power system. This includes studies of load flow, fault level, voltage, protection, and harmonic studies.

  • Generator Performance Standards
We use PSS/E and PSCAD software to model generator performance, undertake due diligence studies for substantiating proposed access standards, and to confirm model robustness.
  • Generator connection scenarios
We have undertaken studies of rotor angle, frequency and voltage stability, fault level, line and transformer rating exceedances for generator connection scenarios.
  • Grid impact and power transfer capacity
We undertake contingency analysis, fault level and voltage stability studies to assess the impact of a generator on network capability and on fault level. This includes load flow studies to produce indicative power transfer capacity assessments based on thermal network capacity.
  • Protection design and studies
We provide protection design services and undertake protection studies to support power system model development as well as generator compliance.
  • System strength preliminary impact assessments
We understand the obligations under the rules in relation to system strength, and produce connection point-specific preliminary impact assessments for our clients.
